The 2026 Northern Lights Lantern Festival was cancelled due to the forecasted rain and thunderstorms. This was an incredibly difficult decision and one that we did not make lightly. We understand how disappointing this is for our volunteers, performers, vendors, sponsors, partners, and the thousands of community members who were looking forward to celebrating with us.
Many have asked how this decision was made. We hope the information below provides some insight into the process and the factors considered before reaching this difficult decision.
In accordance with our Festival Cancellation Policy, the Festival Cancellation Committee met twice this morning, at 6:00 a.m. and again at 8:00 a.m., to review the latest weather forecast. We carefully considered Environment Canada forecasts, including the continued risk of rain and thunderstorms, as well as the potential for lightning and rapidly changing conditions.
It is important to note that our festival takes place in a large open field with no permanent structures or shelter available for attendees, volunteers, or performers. In the event of thunderstorms, this creates a significant safety risk due to lightning exposure. In addition, rainfall can quickly saturate the ground, increasing the risk ** of unsafe walking conditions, and damage to the field itself**, which could render the site in need of repair and impact future events.
Our policy requires that cancellation decisions be based on weather forecasts, the risk of thunder and lightning, and field conditions, while also providing as much notice as possible to our vendors, performers, volunteers, suppliers, and partners. After reviewing all available information, the Committee determined that cancelling the festival was the safest and most responsible decision.
We know this news is incredibly disappointing. Like you, we were looking forward to celebrating with our community on Saturday. Hundreds of volunteer hours go into making this event possible each year, and this decision comes with significant disappointment for everyone involved.
We are incredibly grateful for the continued community support from sponsors, supporters, volunteers and the people who look forward to and attend the festival each August.
Why isn’t there a rain date?
Prior to COVID-19, the Festival included a Thursday rain date. When the Festival returned in 2022, that rain date was removed because it became increasingly difficult to secure the commitment of vendors, suppliers, performers, and volunteers for two separate event days. As a completely volunteer-run festival, with many organizers and volunteers working full-time during the week, a rain date is unfortunately no longer feasible.
To our volunteers, sponsors, performers, vendors, community partners, and everyone who planned to attend thank you for your incredible support and understanding. Your enthusiasm is what makes the Northern Lights Lantern Festival such a special community event.
